A Meditation for the Emerging Leader

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” — Unknown

If you want to be a leader, there are responsibilities. In fact, just by wishing the mantle, a great responsibility is incumbent on you. It is the charge of every leader to make things better; that’s what you are destined to do, if you accept. If you don’t accept, that is fine also. Accepting responsibility for the betterment of others is hard. Bettering yourself is challenging enough. But if you are in fact a leader, you have already accepted this charge. And you will do great things when you try.

Along the way, you will likely sacrifice much, but the rewards will be great. Every effort you put in will hone you, cultivate your environment, and guide the growth of your people. Much like a parent, your rewards will be delayed, but you will have them. And your legacy will become a living ecosystem of intertwined relationships and experiences for the future to be built on — truly a marvel unto itself.

If this is who you are, what matters most is not how much you do, but rather that you do it and do it well. Live with regard to your nature and help others do likewise with the common good in mind. Just be mindful how you aim yourself and others, for that is the fabric of your greatest effect. Reflect on it, cherish it, and let it guide you to serve with purpose.
